Wednesday was a pretty crazy day in the ACC. There were what I thought were going to be two great games, which both turned out to be blowouts.
Let's start with Duke vs. Clemson. I can't remember ever seeing a game in which Duke got beat like this. 27 points -- their worst loss since the 96-97 season. And it really was a domination start to finish. Clemson's press really bothered Duke early into some really dumb turnovers, and they just seemed to lose their composure. Besides Gerald Henderson, nobody could get the ball in the basket. And while Clemson took some wild shots that kept Duke in it early, by the second half they were pretty much scoring at will. Seeing Duke score only 47 points in a game is ridiculous. With a home game coming up next week against Carolina, they've got to get it together. Meanwhile, Clemson is really on a roll -- I think this is the best team they've had in years.
Now, onto Wake Forest vs. Miami. I really thought this was a must win for both teams. Wake was coming off a very bad loss to Georgia Tech, and Miami had lost three in a row. And like the Duke game, this game was close in the first half, but Miami broke it wide open in the second half, also winning by 27. Jack McClinton had another great game for Miami, but it was the defense that got it done. I wonder if Wake hit their ceiling earlier in the year -- they need to get it back in gear or they will slip from a potential 1 seed to maybe as low as a 5.
In the other ACC game of the night, Virginia stunk it up again at home to Boston College. BC got out to a huge lead in the first half and held on for a ten point win. Virginia at this point is just not competitive, and to me BC has been one of the biggest surprises of the year.
