Weekend Preview:
As always this time of year, it's another weekend of critical ACC games. We are just two weeks away from the ACC Tournament, and every win you can get is big. Here's what it looks like this weekend:
Georgia Tech at UNC (Saturday, 12:00) - Why this game is on CBS is beyond me. North Carolina should roll in this one over a struggling Georgia Tech team. First place team hosting the last place team is not the recipe for a good game.
Clemson at Florida State (Saturday, 2:00) - This one should really be a dandy. Both teams are coming off losses and are jockeying for one of the top four seeds and a first round bye in the ACC Tournament. Plus Clemson has the added motivation of avenging their home loss to the Noles earlier this year. I expect this one to come down to the wire.
Wake Forest at Virginia (Saturday, 2:00) - Virginia got back to its losing ways against Miami Thursday, while Wake squeaked one out against N.C. State. Wake Forest has to win this game to keep pace with the other leaders in the conference. Virginia would like another win over a top tier team on its resume to build for next year.
Duke at Virginia Tech (Saturday, 3:30) - I will be on press row for this great matchup in Blacksburg. Coming off their huge win at Clemson, the Hokies have to win one of the next two games. All that requires is beating either Duke or North Carolina. They should have all the motivation in the world against a Duke team that has righted the ship a bit with two wins in a row. I expect a high-intensity battle to the end.
Maryland at N.C. State (Sunday, 7:30) - Maryland simply must win this road game against an N.C. State team that is playing well if it wants to make the tournament. I just have a feeling that the Terps will be a little out of gas after playing two high emotion home games in a row. This is where the bubble bursts.
Boston College and Miami have this weekend off.

What a turn of events!
Yesterday's ACC games didn't turn out like most people expected. And that has shifted the bubble picture for the conference.
The Hokies came up with a HUGE win at Clemson, avenging an earlier home loss. Tech held on, playing great defense on the last possession and winning by 3, 80-77. It was a must-win for the Hokies, and they definitely played like it. This puts them right back on the bubble, at 7-6 in conference and now with road wins over Wake Forest, Miami and Clemson. With three games remaining, if Tech can win either home game against Duke or Carolina they should be in good shape to make the tournament.
Maryland did not take advantage of a big opportunity, dropping a home game to Duke. Greivis Vasquez did not play much in the second half because of foul trouble, and that proved to be the difference. The Terps just could not keep up with Duke after he went out. Maryland has an interesting schedule left -- I could either see them winning or losing all three of their remaining games. They must go at least 2-1 in this stretch or they will be out.
In Thursday night action, Miami must win at Virginia if they want to stay on the bubble. And Wake Forest hosts NC State in a game they should win.

Big Night for the Bubble
There are two big games for bubble teams tonight in the ACC. Virginia Tech travels to Clemson, while Maryland has a home game against Duke. Both of these games match teams that have to win against two teams that would still be just fine if they lose. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the Hokies and the Terps will be coming out on top.
Every game VT and Clemson have played in the last 5 years has come down to the last minute. Just a few weeks ago, Clemson had a big comeback in Blacksburg, beating Tech by 4. That second half comeback has turned out to be something of the beginning of the end for the Hokies. They have lost their last 3 games and are now on the outside looking in. But if the Hokies can find a way to put together a quality win at Clemson they still have a chance at the Tournament. Unfortunately, Clemson is just too good I think to let the Hokies come in and win.
Maryland is coming off a big win against UNC that I think has put them squarely on the bubble. They really need this win over Duke to put them in. But Duke is also highly motivated too, playing one of their best games of the year against Wake and playing at an high intensity level. So who will show up today? Sunday Recap:
On Sunday, Clemson beat Georgia Tech on the road in a pretty blah game. Georgia Tech was up big early on but Clemson wore them down with the press and 3 point shooting. Lewis Clinch had a big game for the Jackets but they can't match the skill and speed of the Tigers. Clemson has as good a shot as any to finish 2nd in the ACC this year.
Duke came to play last night against Wake Forest, in a game where defense was optional. The Devils were relentless on offense and built a huge lead in the first half, only to see Wake and Jeff Teague fight their way back in the game. But Duke pulled away at the end. One crazy stat from the game: in the first 14 minutes of the game Wake had 16 turnovers! The last 26 minutes of the game, Wake had 4.

Saturday Recap:
There were some great ACC games on Saturday. Let's start with the one that was the least competitive. Miami pretty much took care of Boston College at home, leading basically the whole game, and having at least a 7 or 8 point cushion the whole second half. This wasn't really all that surprising -- McClinton had another good game, outdueling Tyrese Rice. Also doesn't have much of an impact on the NCAA tournament hopes (Miami is still on the outside looking in, BC should be in with an easy schedule down the stretch).
Virginia stunk it up at the beginning of their game at NC State but still had a chance in the last minute. NC State continues to be plagued by turnovers -- starting point guard Javier Gonzalez had 7 turnovers and no assists. They let Virginia back in it at the end but used the fouling while up 3 method to successfully close it out.
Maryland won a terrific game against North Carolina, a big boost to their tournament hopes. Vasquez scored Maryland's first 16 points of the game, something I don't think I've ever seen before. He ended up with the first triple-double for a Terp in more than 20 years. I think some of the fault for the loss has to go to Carolina coach Roy Williams. I'm all for the up-tempo style but when you are up by 6 or 8 points with 2 minutes left you need to slow it down, use the shot clock and then get off a shot. They pressed too much, leading into charges and turnovers which allowed Maryland to get back in the game. Then the Terps were too much in overtime. And I've said this before, but Ty Lawson continues to impress me every game out. He is so improved this year it's ridiculous.
And the Hokies lost another heartbreaker, this one at home to Florida State. FSU played a great first half, and Tech played a great second half but it came down to Toney Douglas scoring with 6 seconds left and A.D. Vassallo not being able to answer at the buzzer. Florida State's Derwin Kitchen had a terrific game, including a ridiculous three from basically out of bounds to help their cause. Tech played much better than in the last two games but this still was a game they had to have if they want to make the tournament.
In other news of the day:
Washington State and UCLA were two teams that I loved to watch last year. And yesterday they played a great game at Pauley Pavilion with one of the craziest last few minutes of a game you will ever see. Taylor Rochestie was just incredible for Wazzou down the stretch, with a big 3 and a tip-in. The Cougars aren't gonna make the tournament but they had a hell of an effort against UCLA.
I think last night's loss to Texas proved the Sooners are for real. Blake Griffin played only 11 minutes for Oklahoma and they still were right in the game until the very end.

Weekend Preview:
It's another weekend of big ACC games as we get towards the end of February. Here's a preview:
BC at Miami (Saturday, 12:00) - This is a pretty intriguing matchup. It really is a must-win for Miami, whose NCAA tournament hopes have been quickly fading. And while I think BC is in the tournament right now, a road win in Coral Gables could be a big boost to put them over the top. I expect a close battle that Miami should win.
Virginia at N.C. State (Saturday, 1:00) - A couple weeks ago this would have been a terrible matchup, but both teams are playing better as of late. Virginia has won 2 in a row, while NC State has won 3 of 4, with the only loss coming in Chapel Hill. Both of these teams are basically playing for pride, but it should be a good battle.
North Carolina at Maryland (Saturday, 3:30) - The way UNC has been playing, it's going to be tough for the Terps, but they do play better at home and will be wanting to prove themselves after an embarrassing loss to Clemson. They have a chance at pulling off the upset, one they desperately need if they want any shot at the tournament.
Florida State at Virginia Tech (Saturday, 8:00) - The Hokies are in serious trouble after losing two games they should have at least split on. And it's not the fact they lost two road games, it's the way they've played in those two losses. With a murderer's row schedule coming up any win they can get would be a boost. Florida State has been a very solid team this year and this should be a very competitive game.

I think their only chance for an upset is if Clemson pulls what they did last week in this same time slot on the road at Virginia. Clemson needs to win games like these to improve their seeding.
Wake Forest at Duke (Sunday, 7:30) - This is definitely the marquee matchup of the weekend. Why they have it on against the Oscars is beyond me. Duke and Wake have both had their struggles since their classic matchup last month but I expect them both to come out focused and ready to play. This should be a high-octane offensive matchup and could go either way.
Outside the ACC, this is a great week to check out some of the Cinderellas in March with ESPN's Bracket Busters. Butler at Davidson should be a great game, if Stephen Curry can play. Oklahoma also faces its toughest Big 12 game thus far this season at Texas. And keep an eye on Arizona at Arizona State on Sunday night. That should be a great matchup.

NCAA Tournament Hopes:
As we get closer to the end of the regular season, I wanted to take a look at the ACC teams and their chances at making the Big Dance.
North Carolina - (23-2, 9-2 ACC)
The Heels are of course a lock to make the tournament and should have a great chance at getting a #1 seed in the East or South. Carolina hosts N.C. State Wednesday.
Duke - (20-5, 7-4 ACC)
Duke has probably lost all chance of a #1 seed with their recent slide, but should have a good shot still at a 2 or at worst 3 seed. Duke has a tough stretch coming up, starting with a road game at St. Johns.
Clemson - (20-4, 6-4 ACC)
The Tigers are a lock to make the tournament. They have avoided the recent history of dropping way off when ACC play starts and should have a good seed. Clemson hosts Maryland Tuesday night.
Wake Forest - (19-4, 6-4 ACC)
Wake has dropped off a bit recently and probably won't get the #1 seed that many people were predicting last month. But they are still making the Big Dance. Wake hosts Georgia Tech Wednesday.
Florida State (19-6, 6-4 ACC)
The Noles have been the surprise team of the ACC and are in great shape to make the tournament with wins at Clemson and over Florida. But they aren't a lock just yet -- they have to avoid a late season slide. FSU plays Miami on Wednesday.
Virginia Tech (16-8, 6-4 ACC)
The Hokies I think are squarely on the bubble with a lot of tough games left. The program has hit a rough patch here in the last couple days and desperately need to win at Virginia to stay on the right side of the bubble. VT plays in Charlottesville Wednesday.
Boston College (19-8, 7-5 ACC)
BC made a great step toward making the tournament by beating Duke Sunday night. That along with a win in Chapel Hill should be enough to get in, but they do need to finish strong. The Eagles don't play again until a road date Saturday against Miami.
Maryland (16-8, 5-5 ACC)
I don't think Maryland is going to make the tournament, but they do have a shot with some very difficult games on the horizon. If they can win 2 out of the 3 games against Clemson, North Carolina and Duke they have a chance. Maryland plays at Clemson Tuesday night.
N.C. State (14-9, 4-6 ACC)
State has been playing a lot better of late but have a very slim chance of making the tournament. They can be spoilers though and should make it to the NIT. NC State plays at Carolina on Wednesday night.
Miami (15-9, 4-7 ACC)
Miami certainly looks like an NCAA caliber team when they play but they have lost a lot of close games and likely won't make it. It's actually amazing they have a worse ACC record than NC State and Maryland. Miami travels to play FSU on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers had their biggest win of the year Sunday against Clemson, but they aren't going to any postseason play. They can play spoiler though by beating Virginia Tech. They play the Hokies Wednesday.

The biggest question facing the Yellow Jackets is whether Paul Hewitt will be around for another year. They shouldn't have only one win in the ACC at this point in the season. Georgia Tech plays at Wake Forest, the only team they've beaten, on Wednesday.
So right now I see 6 teams solidly in the tournament, with two others (VT and Miami) on the bubble.

Sunday Recap:
Unlike Saturday, where there were 3 games that were not close, there were 3 great games Sunday that went down to the final minute.
Clemson really had a bad loss on the road against Virginia. I thought they lost the game in the first half where they really played way too sloppy. Virginia was turning the ball over a ton against the Clemson press but instead of capitalizing and building the lead Clemson just turned the ball right back over to them. The Tigers had several shots in close to win the game in regulation, but couldn't convert. These are games that good NCAA Tournament quality teams should win.
Duke played a great first half against Boston College, but the Eagles came back in a very entertaining second half to win. BC made the plays down the stretch, and other than Singler the other main players for Duke didn't really step up. This was a lot like the Carolina game for Duke in which they just faded down the stretch. You have to hand it to BC, they have done a great job this year, and with wins against Duke and UNC should make the tournament.
Miami had a good shot at beating UNC in Coral Gables but couldn't quite pull off the upset. Everyone focuses on Jack McClinton (and for good reason) but it was Ty Lawson who was the money player at the end of the game, hitting three huge 3's at the end of the game. Miami has to be kicking themselves -- they kept Carolina in a low scoring game, turned Hansbrough into a non-factor despite being without one of their best players (Dwayne Collins) and still lost.
And speaking of Hansbrough, it's kind of odd what's happened to him this year. It's not that he's regressed, but I think around the country people are used to him by now, this being his fourth year, and he's not getting near the national attention he had. And he doesn't have the numbers of the past, mostly I think because the players around him are better. Coming into the year, most people would have already given Psycho T the player of the year award, but he's not even being seriously considered right now.

Coming into the year, most people would have already given Psycho T the player of the year award, but he's not even being seriously considered right now.
Saturday Recap:
Some times this year I've felt that Virginia Tech looked like an NCAA Tournament caliber team (Wake, Miami, even the Clemson loss). Other times they have not looked even close, like yesterday against Maryland. It doesn't bother me that they lost, it was not a must-win game against a tough team on the road. It's how they lost. The defense was terrible. I can't tell you how many times I saw two guys run after a Maryland player, leaving another guy wide open for a long 2 or a 3. Maryland got way too many open looks at the basket, and give them credit, they made them. Virginia Tech couldn't sustain success either -- every time they got a couple baskets in a row to make a run they came right back and gave up a 3 or an easy 2.
Seth after the game said he knew this was coming because they had two bad days of practice. What? You are fighting to try to make the NCAA Tournament, to make a name for yourself, and you can't seem to get it together in practice? Maybe this game was an aberration, but they better come out with fire against UVA or it's straight to the NIT. We can't have Malcolm Delaney falling down more times than he is scoring baskets. We can't have Jeff Allen scoring 8 points and then flicking off the crowd on live television. If you don't want to be on an ACC team and want to win every game then get out and go play for a junior college team.
In other ACC action, Wake Forest won big over Florida State. This game wasn't on TV here, so I don't know how it went, but that was a big win for Wake.
And NC State, despite looking terrible in the beginning of the game, got it together and smoked Georgia Tech on the road. Definitely two teams going in opposite directions.

Weekend Preview:
As is always the case in February, every weekend is big in the ACC. And there are several big games ahead to look forward to. Here's a look:
NC State at Georgia Tech (Saturday at 1:30) - These two teams have been struggling. NC State blew that big lead on the road against the Hokies, but came back with their best win of the year over Wake Forest. Georgia Tech has lost close ones to Maryland and Virginia Tech in the past week. It should be a competitive game with two teams fighting but neither one will make a dent in the ACC this year.
Florida State at Wake Forest (Saturday at 4:00) - Wake has really struggled of late, dropping another one at NC State Wednesday to fall to 5-4 in conference. Meanwhile, Florida State has been hot, winning at Clemson and home against Virginia in the past week. This game is very important for both teams, especially Wake who needs to get back on the winning track.
Virginia Tech at Maryland (Saturday at 4:00) - The Hokies have won the last three against Maryland and a win in College Park today would be huge. With a tough closing stretch coming up, any wins they can get now would be very big for NCAA consideration. Maryland has had a lot of turmoil in their program but they still have some talent and are at home. The key in what will most likely be a close game is who can make the plays at the end.
Clemson at Virginia (Sunday at 1:00) - Other than their collapse at home against Florida State last week, Clemson has been playing as well as any team in the conference. And Virginia has lost eight games in a row. I don't see either streak ending in this game.
Duke at Boston College (Sunday at 5:30) - Duke has definitely hit a rough patch, running out of gas at home against North Carolina. A trip to Chestnut Hill might be just what the doctor ordered. It's not that BC is a bad team, but they just don't match up well against the Blue Devils. BC could use another marquee win like this one to boost their NCAA Tournament hopes.
North Carolina at Miami (Sunday at 7:45) - Carolina is playing the best of any team in the conference right now and looks very tough to beat. But with a player like Jack McClinton you never know -- Carolina is coming off the emotional Duke game and has to travel to Miami. If the Hurricanes can knock down outside shots they have a chance to pull off the upset.
This is definitely a weekend to tune into the ACC. There aren't a whole lot of other marquee games this weekend in other conferences. Enjoy the games!

Recap: UNC vs. Duke
This game was pretty compelling for about the first 3/4, with both teams playing at a very high level. But in the end, it was all Carolina. Scoring more than 100 points at Cameron is a great achievement, and you have to wonder about the Duke defense which was coming in giving up around 60 points a game. I think the difference for Carolina was balance. All five starters were in double figures, and no one really jumped off the page (although Lawson had a better than average game). Duke had only 8 points from starter Greg Paulus and 5 points from starter Lance Thomas. And I think Carolina's run game really wore down Duke in the end. Plus when you get Tyler Hansbrough to knock down a contested 3, you know it's your night.
So now where do these teams go from here? Duke has struggled of late (much like Wake Forest) and really needs to stabilize because there are several teams right on their heels (no pun intended). Meantime, I think UNC is becoming the team everyone thought they would be at the beginning of the year. I expect them to finish somewhere around 13-3 in conference.

Preview: UNC vs. Duke
The great thing about ACC basketball is you get great matchups just about every night. But twice a year we get to see the greatest rivalry in college sports play out - Duke and Carolina. The first game is tomorrow, and once again both teams are Final Four contenders. The game will be at Cameron, which could be the difference.
UNC has one of the best players in the country on its side in Tyler Hansbrough. I don't see Duke being able to stop him with Brian Zoubek and Lance Thomas. If I were Duke I would let Hansbrough get his points and concentrate on defending Wayne Ellington and Danny Green. Ellington in particular has been on fire lately. When Duke is on offense, the whole key is their 3 point shooting. They are almost unstoppable when they have multiple guys knocking down threes. But their key is Gerald Henderson. If he can get his points, he motivates the guys around him to play better. The other key playing in Cameron is to limit the runs. Duke almost always has some 15-2 run in them, and you just have to weather that storm.
All this being said, I just think even with the game being played at Duke I have to give the edge to UNC. Since their two game slide they are rolling right along, and Hansbrough has never lost in Cameron. I think Duke has to hit 3s to have a chance at winning, but they can't take wild 3s. They shot way too many from outside against Miami, which really hampered their offense. For whatever reason, the road team has done well in this rivalry of late.

Sunday Roundup:
As a Hokie, I'm really not sure how we were able to beat N.C. State. For 95 percent of the game, it seemed as though VT was doomed for another loss to N.C. State, the 7th in a row. I don't know what it is about the Wolfpack -- they just seem to play better against the Hokies. There was a key sequence near the end of the first half when N.C. State was up 6, there was a very questionable foul call against Malcolm Delaney and Seth Greenberg got T'ed up. Four free throws later, State was up 10 and ended up stretching the lead to 14 at halftime. From there it seemed the game was over.
But Tech eventually crept back in, and with the help of a lot of State turnovers and two missed free throws by Dennis Horner (86% coming in) sent the game to overtime. And once it got to overtime I think everyone knew Tech would win.
A big key for VT was the play of the non-Big Three. They only had 4 points outside of Delaney, Allen and Vassallo against BC, but JT Thompson, Dorenzo Hudson and Terrell Bell all played very good games to give them more scoring options. N.C. State desperately needs a true guard who can score. They need to be able to play Fells at the 3 where he can be much more effective and have a guard that can drive the lane and kick. Until Sidney Lowe can recruit some guards State will be mired to NIT-dom.
I didn't see much of the BC-Wake game, but it looked like Wake's offense was just on fire, especially in the second half. BC was actually up at halftime but Wake blew them out in the second, behind strong games from Teague and Aminu. That was a much more important game for Wake than for BC, and they played like it.
Georgia Tech continues to struggle, losing by 1 point at home to Maryland. They had several shots at the end because of poor Terp free throw shooting but couldn't get it in the basket. This Georgia Tech team just isn't any good -- they have a couple good big guys but not much else. And I don't see Maryland going anywhere either.

Saturday's ACC Action:
Well you can't say Miami didn't have its chances. Duke played about as bad offensively in the first half as I've ever seen them play, and Miami was up 13 at halftime. But they couldn't put Duke away, and Blue Devils came storming back at home. It took a Jack McClinton long 3 to send the game into overtime. But Miami could not score until the last minute of overtime, losing by three. This is the third overtime loss in the ACC this year for the Hurricanes. And if they don't make the tournament this year, they will look at this game as the one that kept them out. It will be interesting to see what happens on Wednesday when Duke hosts Carolina. If they played like they did in the first half today, they have no shot against the Heels.
I really have no explanation for how FSU won at Clemson today. I turned the game off when Clemson was up by almost 20 in the second half and when I flicked back Clemson was only up by 1 with 2 minutes left. And Florida State made the plays down the stretch. This is a huge win for them and has to be a big disappointment for the Tigers.
UNC handled Virginia, no big surprise there. It was fairly close in the first half, but that was only because UNC was not shooting well at all.
In other news, Davidson's streak of 43 straight conference wins came to an end. Congrats to Bobby Cremins' Charleston squad. And the free fall continues for Notre Dame and Georgetown. The Irish lost their 7th in a row, blown out by UCLA. And the Hoyas lost at home in overtime to Cincinnati. Both of these teams are in danger of going to the NIT.

A look ahead at the weekend:
Every weekend is big in February in College Basketball season, and there are six ACC conference games that will go a long way to determining the final standings.
We start at Cameron Indoor, where Miami travels to Duke Saturday at 1:30. Miami is coming off the big win at Wake, while Duke is coming off the embarrassing loss to Clemson. You better believe it's the wrong time for Frank Haith's squad to be traveling to Durham. Duke should be fired up and should roll in this one.
The mismatch of the weekend should be in Chapel Hill, where the struggling Cavaliers take on the Tar Heels Saturday at 4:00. Virginia is not playing well, and UNC is hitting their stride. UNC will blow the Hoos out of the water.
Florida State heads to Clemson Saturday at 7:00. This should be an interesting game, as the Noles look to pull off the upset. They have a bit of a chance maybe catching Clemson on a letdown after their big win. But Clemson is playing really well right now and looks tough to beat, especially at home.
On Sunday, N.C. State heads to Blacksburg for a matchup with the Hokies at 1:30. Tech really needs to come out and win this one against an N.C. State team that has given the Hokies fits. N.C. State isn't playing very well defensively, and at least on paper this is a game Virginia Tech should win.
Boston College travels to Wake Forest at 4:00 on Sunday in what I think will be the best ACC game of the weekend. BC has been a surprise this year and is catching Wake while the Deacs are playing their worst ball of the year. I would expect Wake to bounce back and win but a BC win would not surprise me.
And the final ACC game of the weekend matches two struggling teams when Maryland travels to Georgia Tech at 7:00. The Jackets had a surprising win over Wake Forest last weekend, and is playing on a short turnaround at home. Maryland has not been good lately and I don't think either one of these teams is going to make the tournament.
Looking at the best matchups outside the ACC:
Notre Dame vs. UCLA, Saturday at 1:00 - The Irish have really been struggling and face a tough non-conference game traveling to Los Angeles. UCLA is still the class of the Pac-10.
Memphis vs. Gonzaga, Saturday at 9:00 - Big game for NCAA Tournament seeding. Both teams have been red-hot.
Syracuse vs. Villanova, Saturday at Noon - I put this in because it's the best Big East matchup of the weekend. But you would expect a better Big East matchup than this in February.

Wednesday was a pretty crazy day in the ACC. There were what I thought were going to be two great games, which both turned out to be blowouts.
Let's start with Duke vs. Clemson. I can't remember ever seeing a game in which Duke got beat like this. 27 points -- their worst loss since the 96-97 season. And it really was a domination start to finish. Clemson's press really bothered Duke early into some really dumb turnovers, and they just seemed to lose their composure. Besides Gerald Henderson, nobody could get the ball in the basket. And while Clemson took some wild shots that kept Duke in it early, by the second half they were pretty much scoring at will. Seeing Duke score only 47 points in a game is ridiculous. With a home game coming up next week against Carolina, they've got to get it together. Meanwhile, Clemson is really on a roll -- I think this is the best team they've had in years.
